Nouveau Marché (also: Cimetière ) is a district ( French : quartier ) in the Arrondissement Niamey III of the city of Niamey in Niger .

geography

Rue NM 38 in Nouveau Marché (2018)

Nouveau Marché is located southeast of the historic center of Niamey between the Boulevard de la Liberté and the Boulevard de l'Indépendance. The neighboring districts are Kalley Sud in the northwest, Collège Mariama in the northeast and Cité Fayçal in the southeast. There is a military area southwest of Nouveau Marché. The district extends over an area of around 48.8 hectares and is located in a plateau with a layer of sand less than 2.5 meters deep, which means that only limited infiltration is possible.

The standard scheme for street names in Nouveau Marché is rue NM 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by NM for Nouveau Marché and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones do not necessarily coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue NM 1 scheme is used not only in Nouveau Marché, but also in the Collège Mariama district and in parts of the Kalley Sud district.

history

The district is named after the market area of the Nouveau Marché (French for "new market") located in it. The market dates back to 1920 and was renewed in 1965 and 1993. The district of the same name was created in the early 1950s in the course of increased population growth in Niamey as a continuation of the districts of Kalley and Lacouroussou, which had previously been on the outskirts . From 1978 to 1988 Nouveau Marché was one of the fastest growing areas in Niamey.

population

At the 2012 census, Nouveau Marché had 7,220 inhabitants living in 1,359 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 9,358 in 1,446 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 9,930 in 1,800 households.

Infrastructure

The market area of the Nouveau Marché covers an area of 1.3 hectares. Its radiance extends over the entire city area. The public primary school Ecole primaire de Nouveau Marché was founded in 1961. There is a health center in the district with a Center de Santé Intégré (CSI).
