Collège Mariama is located in the east of the city center of Niamey. The neighboring districts are Kalley Sud in the northwest, Poudrière in the northeast and southeast and Nouveau Marché in the southwest. Collège Mariama extends over an area of about 63.6 hectares and is located in a plateau with a layer of sand that, apart from a small section in the north, is less than 2.5 meters deep, which means that only limited infiltration is possible.

The standard scheme for street names in Collège Mariama is rue NM 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by NM for Nouveau Marché and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones do not necessarily coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue NM 1 scheme is used not only in the Nouveau Marché district, but also in Collège Mariama, among other places.

history

Collège Mariama is historically part of the Kalley district . It is named after the college of the same name, Collège Mariama , located in the district . The alternative place name Sabon Gari comes from the Hausa language and means "new city".

The settlement emerged in the 1960s east of the old city center of Niamey. With the division of Niamey into five districts in 1979, Collège Mariama became part of the 3rd district, which in 1989 merged with the 4th district in the sub-municipality Niamey II, which in turn was dissolved in 1996 in its previous form.

population

At the 2012 census, Collège Mariama had 9,523 inhabitants living in 1,758 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 10,536 in 1,628 households and at the 1988 census, the population was 16,476 in 2,684 households.

Infrastructure

The Roman Catholic private school Collège Mariama, originally an all-girls school, was founded in 1962. The public primary school Ecole primaire de Sabongari was established in 1970.
