The Collège Mariama (also: Lycée Mariama ) is a Roman Catholic private school of secondary education in the city of Niamey in Niger . It is located in the Collège Mariama district of the same name in the Niamey III arrondissement .

history

The Collège Mariama has its origins in the period shortly after Niger gained independence from France in 1960. Hippolyte Berlier , the then Bishop of Niamey , asked the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Help from Canada to establish a girls' school in the City. At that time there was next to the Lycée Nationalno corresponding secondary school for girls in Niger for boys. The Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Help founded a mission in Niamey in 1959 and had been serving in elementary education for girls since October 1960. The superior of the order and Bishop Berlier spoke to President Hamani Diori , who in turn asked the sisters to found the school.

Construction work began in March 1962. The Collège Mariama was opened on October 1, 1962 with 32 students. The first headmistress was Sister Anne Marie Lizotte. An infirmary was built for the boarding school students in 1969, which was also open to the population of the neighborhood. From 1972 on, boys were also admitted to the Mariama College. The number of pupils rose from 489 in 1982 to 885 in 1989.

The Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Help had to leave the Collège Mariama in 1999 due to a lack of staff. The administration was initially carried out by lay people from the Order of the Sisters of the Assumption from France, until it was handed over to people from Niger in 2004. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Collège Mariama in 2012, three school buildings were named after Hamani Diori, Hippolyte Berlier and Anne Marie Lizotte. In the same year, 1,755 pupils attended the Collège Mariama. With the Amicale des Anciens Elèves du Collège Mariama , an alumni association was founded.
