Chapel of St. Amaro

The chapel of Santo Amaro in Madeira , built at the beginning of the 16th century, was rebuilt in the early 20th century.

The fishermen of Santa Cruz called on the patron saint of the sea, Santo Amaro , for good fishing and protection from storms and floods, and dedicated the chapel to him.

Remains of the portal in regional architectural style, a colonnade and an archivolt have been preserved from the original building . The altarpiece is late baroque or already neoclassical, three-sided, white and gold, with a central niche, framed by pilasters and interrupted by a curved front, and must date from the beginning of the 20th century.

Saint Santo Amaro is in a niche, with a glass door and a gold rim, and upholstered , and dates to the 18th century. The festival of saints is celebrated on January 15th, the end of the holiday season.
