background

Kugluktuk is one of the cities with the highest teenage suicide rate in the world

The film is inspired by a true story that took place in the small arctic town of Kugluktuk. This northern community suffers from widespread drug use, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and one of the highest teen suicide rates in the world, and is threatened by the legacy of colonialism.

The students, all Inuit, were initially skeptical when Russ Sheppard, a teacher on a one-year contract from the south, came to see them. Shaken by the death of one of his students, Sheppard had begun introducing lacrosse to his class. While these initially offered resistance, the students gradually approached the sport and founded their own lacrosse team, the “Grizzlies” team. With the support of the entire city, Sheppard and the team were allowed to participate in the national lacrosse championship in Toronto. Despite defeat, the students recognized the spirit of community.
