Rose Marie "Tantoo" Cardinal (born July 20, 1950 in Fort McMurray , Alberta , Canada ) is an indigenous actress ( Cree , Métis ).

Life

Cardinal grew up with her grandmother in Anzac , Alberta and began her acting career in the local theater scene. She attracted attention in 1986 with her acting performance in Abysses by Anne Wheeler , for which she was nominated for a Genie Award for best actress.

This was followed by appearances in films such as Dances With Wolves , Black Robe - On the River of the Iroquois and Legends of Passion . In addition, she often played supporting roles in television series. Her guest appearances in the popular Canadian series North of 60 brought her three nominations for the Gemini Award , which she won in 1996. In 2001 she received the First Americans in the Arts Award for her role in the television drama Irrfahrten des Herzens (2000) .

In 1993 Cardinal received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rochester . She was married to actor John Lawlor from 1988 to 2000 . From this marriage a child was born.

In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
