Wind River is a thriller by Taylor Sheridan , who on 21 January 2017 under the film festival Sundance world premiere, and on August 4, 2017 American US in the cinemas came. As early as May 2017, the film was shown in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes International Film Festival , where Sheridan was awarded the prize for directing (Prix de la mise-en-scene) . The opening credits indicate that the film was inspired by real events.

action

Cory Lambert is employed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as a gamekeeper on the Wind River Indian reservation in Wyoming as a white man . He mainly hunts predators that endanger livestock. While stalking, he discovers the barefoot corpse of the indigenous 18-year-old Natalie, the best friend of his deceased daughter , in the snow .

The FBI dispatched the white Las Vegas agent Jane Banner to investigate the incident . It is insufficiently prepared for the winter weather and the mentality of the local people; the social situation in the reserve is characterized by a lack of prospects, poverty, ethnic conflicts and sexualised violence . The chief of the local tribal police is responsible for an area of more than 3000 km² with only six officers. That corresponds to the area of Rhode Islands . Since Banner doesn't know the area, she hires Lambert as a guide. He tells her that his daughter had also died in the wild three years earlier under unknown circumstances. The uncertainty torments him to this day and has shattered his marriage to the indigenous Wilma.

The local pathologist notes that Natalie was knocked down and raped several times, and must then have escaped through the freezing cold until she died of bleeding from the lungs caused by the freezing cold. The FBI officer determines that Natalie had a white friend named Matt who works for an oil drilling company. When Banner follows a trail in the mountains with Lambert, they find Matt's body. The next day, she drives the police chief and two of his men to Matt's trailer at the drilling site, where there is a conflict with the company's armed guards because the foreman reveals the perpetrator's knowledge. Meanwhile, Lambert is nearby looking for clues.

Natalie's night of death is shown in a flashback. Matt shares the trailer with Pete and the foreman, who went out with the coworkers that night. Natalie and Matt are in bed when the drunken men unexpectedly return. Pete harasses the girl and a fight breaks out in which Matt is overpowered by five men. Pete rapes Natalie, the others watch. When Matt breaks free to help her, she escapes into the freezing wilderness barefoot and only thinly clothed.

Back in the present, Lambert accidentally discovered the trail of a snowmobile leading to the drilling site. When he warns the police chief by radio, it is already too late: the conflict at the caravan escalates and all the police officers are killed in the violent shooting. Banner, wearing a bulletproof vest , survives seriously injured. Lambert, who approaches the camp, kills four of the five guards with his hunting rifle at a great distance.

Only Pete, the rapist, escapes injured. After Lambert has reached the scene, he supplies Banner makeshift. She sends him after the fugitive, knowing that Lambert will not take the man prisoner. Lambert tracks down Pete in the snowy forest and brings him up a mountain ridge. There he promises him that if he tells the truth, he will get a chance. He gets Pete to confess to the rape and murder of Matt, which he shared with the guards. Lambert keeps his word and lets Pete go, saying that he now has the same chance as Natalie: he can try barefoot to reach the road miles away. Pete starts running, collapses after a few hundred meters and dies.

After visiting Banner in the hospital, Lambert goes to see his friend Martin, Natalie's indigenous father. He had given up and painted his face white and blue. He calls it his dead face. Since the knowledge of traditional painting has been lost, he invented one himself. A phone call from his son Chip from prison dissuades him from committing suicide. Lambert remains seated next to him to remember his daughter.

In the credits it says: “There are missing persons statistics for every population group in the USA. Not for Native Americans. "

production

Staff and film distribution

The director took Taylor Sheridan , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Wind River is Sheridan's first studio film to direct, after Sicario in 2015 and Hell or High Water in 2016, and the third to be screenplayed. The film marks the end of his American Frontier trilogy after Sicario and Hell or High Water . When asked how he came up with telling a story from there, Sheridan told epd Film : “In my twenties one was mine best friends a Native American who grew up on such a reservation. He often took me there and I was fascinated by this world. Of course, I was an outsider there, like Jeremy Renner aka Cory Lambert in the film. But I have many friends there to this day, and over the years I have been concerned with how badly the USA treats these people. ”The Bonner Generalanzeiger writes:“ The Arapahoe and Shoshone tribes in the reservation have checked the script . “Some residents were also extras in the film.

Wind River deals with the modern American frontier, the border area, according to Sheridan, and the film looks at America's greatest failure, the Indian reservations. The General-Anzeiger reads: “It captivates with the beauty of the place, shocked with the violence and moved with a catharsis at the end of the story. The exciting thriller with borrowings from the classic western is more than a murder hunt: landscape painting and social study . "

Two months after Wind River hit cinemas in the United States, the first sexual abuse allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein became public, after which Sheridan discussed with the film's sponsors, producers, and lead actors and negotiated again with the Weinstein Company: "I had to get the film back," says Sheridan. After the allegations and negotiations, the Weinstein Company resigned from the secondary business with DVDs and streaming completely; Lionsgate and Netflix took over. Only the cinema distribution remained with the Weinstein Company, but from this point on the sales proceeds for the film went to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center , which is committed to investigating crimes against Indian women.

Cast and dubbing

Elizabeth Olsen plays FBI agent Jane Banner in the film. Jeremy Renner took on the role of United States Fish and Wildlife Service employee Cory Lambert. Kelsey Chow plays Natalie Hanson. Martin Sensmeier can be seen in the role of Chip and Gil Birmingham in the role of Natalie's father Martin Hanson. The role of Evan has been cast by Ian Bohen , Dillon is played by Matthew Del Negro and Curtis is played by Hugh Dillon , and Eric Lange is played by Dr. See Whitehurst. The roles of Lambert's wife Wilma and her son Casey were cast with Julia Jones and child actor Teo Briones . Graham Greene plays the boss of the local police force.

The German dubbing was based on a dialogue book and directed by Lutz Riedel at Berliner Synchron GmbH Wenzel Lüdecke. Gerrit Schmidt-Foss speaks in the German version Cory Lambert, Shandra Schadt lends her voice to Jane Banner.

Film music

Wind River was filmed in Park City , Utah , where it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 .

The score was composed by Nick Cave and the Australian-French musician Warren Ellis . The soundtrack to the film includes 23 tracks and was released on August 4, 2017 by Lakeshore Records. A few days earlier, Under The Radar Magazine had presented the piece Snow Wolf in advance and Lakeshore Records had also published some excerpts from a cross-section of pieces from the soundtrack on YouTube.

Filming and publishing

The film was shot in Park City , Utah, where the film also celebrated its world premiere on January 21, 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . Sheridan was forced to give the film a look that is actually not his preferred one: “In my ideal vision, a film lives from very selected tracking shots. But in this case I was able to throw them overboard, because camera rails cannot be laid in such deep snow. So my cameraman Ben Richardson had to use handheld cameras after all. "

In June 2017 the film was shown at the Sydney Film Festival . The film was released in US theaters on August 4, 2017 and in British theaters on September 8, 2017. The film was screened at the Cannes International Film Festival from May 20, 2017 and presented at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival from July 7, 2017 . The cinema release in Germany was on February 8, 2018.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The reason for the release states: “The film is predominantly calm and linear, told with genre-typical crime and suspense elements, but also portrays the hard life on the reservation in a realistic and easily understandable way. Children and young people under the age of 16 can overwhelm individual scenes with depictions of violence and death in combination with the dark atmosphere of the film. 16-year-olds are able to place these scenes in the context of the genre and the story and to distance themselves sufficiently. "

Reviews

The film was rated positively by 87 percent of the critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes (as of January 27, 2018). On Metacritic , based on 44 reviews, the film is rated with 73 out of 100 possible points. (As of August 31, 2019)

Matt Goldberg from collider.com notes that Taylor Sheridan, like in his previous films Sicario and Hell or High Water , also transferred elements of the classic western to the film in Wind River and lets them work through a modern lens.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire says Sheridan tells the stories the way a predator hunts and draws its ever-narrowing circles around its prey to end up on the carcass. Although Wind River starts with the Whodunit question, as you know it from many crime series, in the film it ultimately leads to an extremely successful stalemate via the sniper.

Manfred Riepe from epd Film thinks that the story is very exciting, especially since Sheridan uses an elegant flashback to describe the fate of the victim with almost mythical force. The quality of the representation is also good, Riepe continues: “ Jeremy Renner plays the avenging angel Lambert at the side of Elizabeth Olsen as FBI agent. Both of them have already stood in front of the camera in two Marvel adaptations and harmonize even in this cold snowy western world. But why, one wonders early on, is the fate of the Indians - after all the basic motif of the ambitious film - portrayed from the perspective of two whites? ”It is also clear that Sheridan, as a director and author, does not do anything with female characters know, says Riepe, and he will succeed in creating a technically adept independent western whose characters have unfortunately not yet arrived in the present.

Christoph Schröder from Zeit Online thinks that after a short time the film develops a suction that is difficult to escape, and accompanied by the hypnotic soundtrack by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave , images, sounds and nature condense into an eerie scenario, white on white from which the contours only emerge on closer inspection. The grief of the parents of the murdered Indian girl is combined with the general mood that prevails on the reservation, Schröder continues: “Young people become criminals or drug addicts, but mostly both. The cold freezes the ubiquitous apathy into an oppressive state of being. The dialogues seem to have broken out of anger and sadness. "

Gross profit

The production costs of the film of around 11 million US dollars are offset by worldwide income from cinema screenings of around 40.5 million US dollars. (As of October 24, 2017) The film recorded 105,741 visitors in Germany.
