Eden (Original: The Abduction of Eden) is an American feature film directed by Megan Griffiths from 2012. The main roles are played by Jamie Chung , Matt O'Leary and Beau Bridges . The screenplay by Richard B. Phillips (together with Megan Griffiths) is based on the true story of Chong Kim , who was kidnapped by an American trafficking ring in the 1990s and forced into prostitution. Eden had its world premiere at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival.

Eden, actually Hyun Lae, a young Korean-American girl, is approached by a young man disguised as a firefighter in a bar after an evening together with her friend Abbie and after a short drive in his car he is handed over to his accomplice Mario, who leaves her in the trunk kidnapped his car tied up and sold to a human trafficking ring. There she is forced into prostitution with other girls. During the two years she spends in the hands of them far outside of Las Vegas , Nevada , she is stripped of her personal property and dignity, some of which are drugged and ill-treated. Only Priscilla helps her over the first few months and explains how the system works and which roles are played by Svetlana, Vaughan, the nurse and others. During this time, she learns, reluctantly but effectively, how the system works and causes one of the gangsters, Vaughan, to begin to trust her. Over time, she ensures her own survival through her intelligence and her influence on Vaughan. Shortly before the girls move, she manages to incapacitate Vaughan with manipulated drugs, free Priscilla from Mario's hands and establish contact with her parents.

production

Eden was produced in 2011 by Centripetal Films, a Seattle , Washington- based production company owned by Colin Harper Plank. The film was shot in the summer of 2011 with a largely local crew in Washington State. The film crew received financial support from Washington Filmworks , a non-profit organization that provides financial support for films produced in Washington State. The idea for the film came about when screenwriter Richard B. Phillips contacted her after a newspaper article about Chong Kim's story and was able to persuade them to create a script together. Then a script was adapted from Phillips' script, which was supplemented and revised together with Megan Griffiths. Griffiths could also be won over to direct.

Film bug

In one scene, Bob Gault as US Marshal uses a cell phone with GPS functionality. Such cell phones were not available at the time of Chong Kim's abduction.

backgrounds

As of June 2014, an organization called Breaking Out based in Ocala , Florida has been claiming that Chong Kim made up the story on which the script is based. However, various online media only refer to a Facebook entry of the organization, which remains without any evidence. Only statements from interviews, blogs, etc. a. opposed to those of the book. The facsimile of the court files cannot be verified either. The cause of this investigation was apparently problems in obtaining recognition as a charitable organization (Form 501c3).

Awards

The film, which premiered in 2012 at the South by Southwest Film Festival, won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film, Special Jury Recognition for Best Actress, Jamie Chung, and Director Award for Emergent Narrative Director Female, Megan Griffiths. The film also won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Actress, Jamie Chung, and the Lena Sharpe Award for Persistence of Vision; the Seattle Reel NW Award at the 2012 Seattle International Film Festival . He also won the Audience Award for Best Picture at the 2012 San Diego Asian Film Festival.

Performances

In theaters, Eden was released in North America by Phase 4 Films on March 20, 2013 at the Film Forum New York City . It also hit theaters in Los Angeles and Seattle, followed by a VOD release on April 20, 2013. On June 11, 2013, the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray . In Europe, the DVD release on September 9, 2013 was carried out in the UK by Queensway Digital Ltd .
