The charismatic outlaw Frank Griffin terrorized the American Midwest around 1884 with his 30-man gang. After devastating the village of Creede, Colorado and massacring the population , Marshal John Cook sets out to find the bandits. In addition to the cavalry , Cook tries his old companion, LaBelle sheriff Bill McNue, to help. Due to an eye disease, which Bill hides, he refuses. Cook reports to McNue about Roy Goode, former gang member Griffins fell out with the gang and robbed Griffin. In a shootout during the escape, Goode injured his foster father so badly that his left arm had to be amputated . Bill McNue is one of the few surviving men in LaBelle, along with the shopkeeper, saloon owner and his young Deputy Whitey. Most of the male residents worked as miners and were killed in a mining accident at the local ore mine .
Roy happens to come across the young widow Alice Fletcher's ranch . Roy shoots at first out of fear, but then takes care of the stranger. She lets him train her horses and Roy wins the reputation and trust of her son Truckee. Griffin now has his alternative version of the story spread through the newspaper reporter Grigg, and he threatens anyone who should give Goode refuge. The women from LaBelle decide to leave the further mining of the ore and the protection of the city in the hands of a mining company. This brings a seedy group around Ed Logan into town. This protection force deployed by the mining company quickly begins to terrorize the city itself. After Bill has got up to help Cook, he discovers that Cook was lured into a trap by Griffin's gang and shot. The cavalry is no longer involved in the pursuit of Griffins due to a mission against belligerent Indians . Through Grigg, who recognized Goode in LaBelle, Griffin gets the decisive clue about the whereabouts of his foster son. The gang begins their journey to LaBelle. In his pursuit of the gang, McNue discovers a clue about the target of the outlaws and is able to warn the city. The security forces of the mining company then steal the horses and flee. The ladies are now preparing to defend the city, as it is no longer possible to escape. Whitey tries to get help from his girlfriend's family, a group of former buffalo soldiers from the LaBelle settlement of Blackmore. While the family are still discussing support, Griffin arrives at the settlement and mercilessly slaughters the Blackmore residents. While searching for her ridden son Truckee, Alice happens to witness the crime and is able to warn the residents of LaBelle.
The heavily armed residents of LaBelle entrench themselves in the city's former brothel , the only stone-built house, to receive Griffin's gang. This is followed by a violent exchange of fire between the gang, the entrenched women and Goode and McNue, who confront the gang on the street. Only Griffin can escape. Goode confronts his former foster father when he approaches the Truckee who had an accident with his horse. In the duel with Griffin, Roy is shot, but can shoot Griffin. Roy leaves LaBelle to look for his brother on the west coast and leaves Alice the stolen money.

LaBelle, New Mexico actually exists and owned an ore mine; an accident as described in the series occurred in October 1913 at the neighboring Stag Canyon coal mine. Here 236 miners were killed in an explosion.
