Anzac is a hamlet ( English Hamlet ) in the eastern part of Canada's province of Alberta , who as unincorporated community ( English unincorporated place ) to the district of Wood Buffalo belongs.

geography

Anzac is located about 350 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Edmonton , 40 kilometers southeast of Fort McMurray and almost 50 kilometers west of the border with the province of Saskatchewan . Gregoire Lake is located on the western edge of Anzac , while Alberta Highway 881 touches the southern areas of the town. The closest airport is Fort McMurray International Airport .

history

The first inhabitants of the region were the Cree Indians . When an Australian-New Zealand army corps inspected the area for the construction of a railway line during World War I , the place was also named Anzac in honor of this ANZAC division in 1917. Since the site lies in the area of the Athabasca oil sands and thus within the core regions of Canada's oil production, investigations into the use of these resources began . If the generation of energy from oil sands can be presented in an environmentally friendly and economically profitable manner in the coming years, a strong increase in the number of inhabitants can be expected.
