Fort McMurray International Airport ( IATA: YMM , ICAO: CYMM ) is the airport in the community of Fort McMurray in the Canadian province of Alberta . Because of the Athabasca oil sands , the city has grown significantly in population and is now Alberta's fifth largest city.

Location and transport links

Fort McMurray International Airport is eight miles southeast of central Fort McMurray. By road, the airport is accessible via Alberta Highway 69 . This ends west of the airport on Alberta Highway 63 , which leads to Fort McMurray.

The Fort McMurray International Airport by buses in the public transport involved. The WOOSH Route 11 connects the passenger terminal with the municipality Fort McMurray.

history

In 1936, a light aircraft runway was opened near the Fort McMurray community . Over the next few decades, several longer runways were built. A passenger terminal was also built. A permanent control tower followed in 1981 . In 1986 a larger passenger terminal with a capacity of 250,000 passengers per year was opened.

In 1999, Wood Buffalo District established the Regional Airport Commission, which replaced the state as owner of the airport. In 2001, Westjet Airlines began serving Fort McMurray. In 2007 the runway was extended to its present length.

In December 2009 the Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) was established. They bought the airport in January 2010 from the Wood Buffalo district . In 2013, United Airlines flights to Denver launched flights to the United States for the first time . These have now been discontinued. In the fall of 2013, the Canada Border Services Agency established a permanent presence at the airport so that it received the status of an international airport. Due to the strong growth in passenger numbers, a new passenger terminal was built and opened on June 9, 2014. Since then, the number of passengers has been falling again. As a result of severe forest fires, the airport was closed from May 5 to June 10, 2016.

Passenger terminal

The passenger terminal, which opened on June 9, 2014, has a floor area of ​​15,000 square meters. It is equipped with four passenger boarding bridges and has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year.

Former passenger terminal

The former passenger terminal opened in 1986 has an area of ​​2,950 square meters. It is equipped with a passenger boarding bridge and has a capacity of 250,000 passengers per year.

Airlines and destinations

Fort McMurray International Airport is used by Air Canada , Air Canada Express , McMurray Aviation , Northwestern Air, and WestJet Encore . Air Canada flies daily to Toronto-Pearson , while Air Canada Express flies several times a day to Calgary and Edmonton . WestJet Encore also flies several times a day to Calgary and Edmonton. McMurray Aviation and Northwestern Air operate flights to Fort Chipewyan and Edmonton and Fort Chipewyan, respectively , several times a week .
