history

Chemical weapons

With the invasion of the National Socialist German Reich in Algeria, the British military was looking for a new training and test site for various research and experiments. In 1941 the Canadian government offered a sparsely populated area to the British government. The Canadian government bought the site from the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Hudson's Bay Company. 452 people were persuaded to move so that the site could be used for military purposes. Research in the research center began in June 1941.

Usage and units

The area is still used today as a research and training area. The base is located outside the nearest inhabited areas. Several warning signs are set up around the base and indicate dangerous ammunition, weapons and biological weapons that could have hit outside the site.

Today several units are based on the base:

  • 1 Military Police Unit Suffield
  • G3 branch
  • G4 branch
  • G6 branch
  • British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS)
