YYC Calgary International Airport is an international commercial airport in Calgary in the Province of Alberta ( Canada ). In 2016, it handled 15.68 million passengers and performed 224,828 take-offs and landings, making Calgary International Airport Canada's fourth largest airport in terms of flight movements. It is the hub for Westjet Airlines and Air Canada .

history

The airport was opened in 1939 as Calgary Municipal Airport with only one terminal, which still exists today. During the Second World War, two asphalt runways were built, which could also be used civilly from 1948. The administration buildings of the military have now become Terminal 2. In 1950, Canadian Pacific Airlines was the first scheduled airline to start operating , and from 1961 on, it also opened the first intercontinental connection to Amsterdam with a Douglas DC-8 . In 1969 what was then MCCall Field was renamed Calgary International Airport and Terminal 4 was opened in 1977 with a Concorde overflight. In 1989 the airport already recorded almost five million passengers and from 1994 onwards, thanks to the Open Sky Agreement with the USA, the US border formalities were already possible in Calgary. With the construction of a new runway 17L / 35R in north-south direction with a length of 4,267 meters and a new international terminal, which was opened in 2015, a capacity of 20 million passengers per year was achieved.

Runways

The airport has four asphalt runways:

• 08/26 (1890 m)
• 11/29 (2438 m)
• 17R / 35L (3863 m)
• 17L / 35R (4267 m)

The slopes were renamed in 2013 due to the changed geomagnetic field. Commissioned in 2014, runway 17L-35R is the longest in Canada at 4,267 m (14,000 ft.). The aircraft have a longer take-off phase due to the lower air pressure.

There are four check-in halls . A specialty is the treatment of passengers on flights to the USA . The customs control already takes place here in Canada.

Equipment and systems for cargo air traffic

The transshipment points are called Apron I-VII.

Apron II can handle up to four Boeing 747s at the same time.

General aviation

The general aviation buildings and facilities are located in the south of the airfield. These are u. a. around Shell Aerocenter, Esso Avitat, Calgary flight training and a customs building . Another interesting fact is that every 2 to 3 years some De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft of Maldivian Air Taxi come out of the Maldives for maintenance on a 5-day trip .
