The Grand Marché , also Habou-Béné , is a market in Niamey in Niger .

Location and characteristics

On the edge of the Grand Marché (2006)

The Grand Marché is located in the Banizoumbou district of the Niamey III arrondissement . The National Road 1 , which crosses Niamey, runs right past the market. The Grand Marché extends over an area of 6.9 hectares . In terms of the number of market stalls, it is Niamey's second largest market after the Marché de Katako . Grand Marché is French for “large market” and thus stands for the counterpart to the Petit Marché (“small market”) by Niamey. In Zarma , the Grand Marché is called Habou-Béné, which means "upper market", while the Petit Marché in Zarma is called Habou-Ganda ("lower market").

Due to its distinctive 1980s architecture by Kalt Pouradier-Duteil Vignal , the Grand Marché is a symbol of the city. The state of preservation is comparatively good. The market is characterized by a large, hall-like structure, within which the market stalls with a uniform size of 4.5 square meters are arranged. It is reminiscent of an African variation on the shape of a modern shopping center.

history

The Grand Marché has been in its current location since 1949. It goes back to an older market that was originally located on the banks of the Niger River at the height of the later Kennedy Bridge . In 1954 the Grand Marché was equipped with permanent metal halls. The urban development around the market area took off. During a renovation in 1962, cement foundations were added.

On the night of March 30th to March 31st, 1982, the Grand Marché fell victim to a major fire. The destruction was perceived as a national catastrophe, highlighting the lack of government control over Nigeria's markets. With a new architectural concept, the rebuilding of the market began in 1985 and was completed in 1986. The administration of the Grand Marché was withdrawn from local authorities and transferred to the newly founded Société de Construction et de Gestion des Marchés (SOCOGEM), a private company under the control of the entire state.

A fire destroyed part of the Grand Marché again in 2009. The reconstruction cost one million CFA francs . Around two thousand market stalls that had arisen on the streets around the actual market and represented a traffic obstacle were demolished in 2016.

Product range

The food sold at the Grand Marché is either locally produced or imported. Foods imported by wholesalers include rice, flour, sugar, and oil. The range of goods also includes traditional and modern clothing, shoes, blankets, aprons, fabrics from Asia and batik textiles from Mali . You can find jewelry and glasses, glass beads and foreign cosmetic products. The market customers can also stock up on school supplies, entertainment electronics, mosquito nets and decorated enamel plates.
