Cold Pouradier-Duteil Vignal

Kalt Pouradier-Duteil Vignal ( KPDV for short ) was a French architecture firm based in Paris and with a branch in Niamey .

history

The office was founded in 1955 in Paris by the young French architects Michel Kalt, Daniel Pouradier-Duteil and Pierre Vignal. Michel Kalt had taken part in a six-month study trip to traditional residential buildings in Cameroon in 1949 , during which he was able to establish connections with French business people active in Africa. The aluminum group Pechiney commissioned Kalt Pouradier-Duteil Vignal with their first major project, the planning of the single-family houses for a new workers' settlement with a population of 20,000 in Fria in Guinea , which was built from 1957 to 1958. This already showed the typical KPDV connection, primarily not aimed at representation, between European modernism (which in Fria was directly influenced by Jean Prouvé ) and elements from the African building tradition.

In the course of the independence of many states around the "African Year" 1960, KPDV received extensive orders for the purpose of expanding the education and health infrastructure in West Africa financed by the European Development Fund. In the early 1960s, the architectural office set up a branch in Niamey, the capital of Niger , and planned, among other things, over 800 school buildings in countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal . When the focus of development aid shifted away from construction projects in the 1970s, Kalt Pouradier-Duteil Vignal adapted to the changed circumstances and emphasized even more the construction of an African identity in the architectural forms. This is one of the reasons why the state provided the office with prestigious plans such as Niamey University .

One of KPDV's last major projects, the Grand Marché in Niamey, which was newly built between 1983 and 1986 , was also one of those whose quality earned the office the most recognition. The unmistakable, distinctive urban architecture was not at the expense of the functional and atmospheric demands on a typical African market. The collaboration between Michel Kalt, Daniel Pouradier-Duteil and Pierre Vignal ended in 1987.
