The Kennedy Bridge ( French : Pont Kennedy ) is a bridge across the Niger River in the Nigerien capital Niamey .

history

The bridge, named after President John F. Kennedy , was the first Niger bridge built in Niamey with the help of the United States . Its planner was the American bridge engineer E. Lionel Pavlo . Construction began on December 18, 1967, and the Kennedy Bridge opened on December 19, 1970. For over 40 years, the Kennedy Bridge was the only way to cross the river in the city, apart from pirogues , which have moorings on both sides of the bridge. In 2011, a second Niger bridge was opened in Niamey, the Pont de l'amitié Chine-Niger (“Bridge of Friendship China-Niger”).

Construction and location

The girder bridge extends over a length of 710 m. Huge traffic jams regularly form on the narrow and worn Kennedy Bridge during rush hour. On the left bank, the bridge joins the Rond Point Kennedy roundabout in Niamey city center. Notable buildings at this end of the bridge are the Congress Palace, the Hôtel Gaweye and the Grand Hôtel. On the right bank is the Pont Kennedy district, named after the bridge, in the Niamey V arrondissement . The Kennedy Bridge runs in their midst a river island, lived on the earlier crocodiles that only further south today in W National Park can be found.
