from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Léon Mugesera (* 1952 ) is a Rwandan politician and war criminal.

Life

Before the genocide began in Rwanda, Mugesera was a leader of the Mouvement républicain national pour la démocratie et le développement (MRND). In an address to MRND members on November 22, 1992, he was the first high-ranking politician to publicly call for the murder of the Tutsi and opposition Hutu . He was then charged with sedition. In 1993, a year before the genocide, Mugesera fled to Canada .

The Canadian authorities ordered him to leave the country in 1996. Mugesera did not comply, citing the dangers of torture and unfair trials in Rwanda. In 2005 the decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada. Defense requests delayed the extradition date again and again until Mugesera was finally deported on January 23, 2012.

In 2016, Mugesera was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Rwanda for his involvement in genocide. He is being held in Mpanga prison in his home country.
