Mouvement républicain national pour la démocratie et le développement ( MRND ) was a political party in Rwanda .

Between 1975 and 1994, the MRND was the ruling party under President Juvénal Habyarimana and initially represented the interests of the Hutu . You were later a party member by birth. From 1992 to 1994, Bernard Munyagishari was Secretary General of the MRND.

The Coalition for the Defense of the Republic was considered the hardliner wing of the party under party president Habyarimana, who eventually split off as a separate party.

After the first invasion of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in 1990, the party published the extremist Hutu magazine Kangura on the initiative of Agathe Habyarimana . The magazine fueled resentment towards the Tutsi and was a pioneer of the genocide in Rwanda . Until 1993 the party called itself Mouvement républicain national pour le développement . After Habyarimana's death in April 1994, hardliners took over the party, many of whom were major actors in the genocide. With the conquest of the country by troops of the Tutsi-friendly RPF under Paul Kagame , the party was disempowered and finally banned.
