Armando (real name Armando Riveiro de Aguilar Malda ; born January 16, 1971 in Sopelana , Spain ) is a former Basque football player who was last active at Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Primera División .
Player career
The veteran Armando played in his youth for the traditional club Sporting Gijón . There he could not prevail in the 2nd team, so he switched to Club Bermeo , a lower-class provincial team. But it was there that Deportivo Alavés discovered him. In the following three years (as 3rd goalkeeper) he only made four professional appearances. After a season as a substitute keeper at Barakaldo CF , the late breakthrough came. At the age of 28 he became a regular goalkeeper at the then 3rd division club FC Cádiz , with whom he made the march into the Primera División , even if they were relegated again the following season.
After 8 ½ years, the Basque Armando was signed by the legendary Basque Club Athletic Bilbao to replace the long-term injured Gorka Iraizoz . In his own words, for Armando it is "the greatest thing in his career that has ever happened to him".
After the 2009/10 season Armando ended his career.
Special
The game Betis-Athletic during the 2007/08 season had to be stopped prematurely because Armando was seriously injured by a spectator throwing a bottle.
