The Barakaldo CF is a Spanish football club from the city of Barakaldo , Basque Country . The club, founded in 1917, played in Segunda División B , Group 1 in the 2019/20 season .

history

Club formation

The "Barakaldo Club de Fútbol" was founded in 1917. In its 90-year history, the Basque Country club has had different names. These were: Baracaldo Fútbol Club , Baracaldo Oriamendi , Baracaldo Altos Hornos , Baracaldo Club and most recently Barakaldo Club de Fútbol .

Since their own jerseys look exactly like those of Peñarol Montevideo from Uruguay , one of the Basques' nicknames is “Peñarol”. Another is "Fabriles", as Barakaldo has been a workers' association since it was founded. So it is not surprising that the fans interpret the club colors black and gold as follows: Black should stand for the smoke of the factories and gold for the profit that was made with them.

Segunda División / 2B

In the debut season of the Spanish Primera División (1928/29) Barakaldo was classified in a league that was also called "Segunda División B". It would take until the 1934/35 season until Barakaldo was represented in the Segunda División . Actually from the beginning Barakaldo was an elevator team between the second and third Spanish league. The club has never played in the highest Spanish league, but after the Galician team of Racing de Ferrol , with 30 seasons, is the team that has completed the second most seasons in the Segunda División.

In several stages, Barakaldo was able to confidently stay in the second division, while in some years relegation was already certain after one season. The longest time in a row (eleven years) played the Barakaldo CF between 1946 and 1957. While 1977/78 the promotion to the first division was barely missed, Barakaldo's successful times soon came to an end. Since 1981 the club could not return to its regular league (the Segunda División ).

Barakaldo currently

In the 80s and 90s the club had to struggle with enormous economic problems. On the one hand, industry and people moved away from the city, on the other hand, Sestao SC from the neighboring town of Sestao became the new football number 1 in the region. The main sponsor also had to dissolve his own company and so the Basques had no financiers for the time being. So Barakaldo was partially passed through to the now fourth-rate Tercera División . In the 30 years since 1988, in which Barakaldo - except for the 2011/12 season, in which the club was relegated to the Tercera División - was only represented in Segunda División B , the Basques got eleven opportunities to play in the play-offs to play promotion to the Segunda División , but failed every time. The club was most recently in the play-offs in the 2018/19 season.
