On September 29, 1940 he made his debut in the Primera División and formed together with his teammates Agustín Gaínza , Zarra and José Luis Panizo a legendary attack line. So Iriondo won with the Basques in the season of 1942-43 under coach Juan Urquizu the Spanish Championship and in the years 1943 , 1944 , 1945 and 1950 the Spanish Cup . On June 23, 1946, he made his debut in the Spanish national team when they lost 1-0 to Ireland. In his second and last international match, Spain lost 4-1 to Portugal; Iriondo scored the only goal of the Spaniards. In 1953 Iriondo left After 115 goals in 323 competitive games Atlético Bilbao and then played for two other Basque representatives: 1953 briefly for the second division FC Barakaldo and from 1953 to 1955 for the first division Real Sociedad . He then ended his active career at the age of 37.

On December 17, 2011, at the age of 93, Iriondo received an official honor for his services to the Basque Country club before the league match between Athletic Bilbao and Real Saragossa on the lawn of San Mamés .

successes

As a trainer

Immediately after the end of his active career, Iriondo struck a career as a football coach and initially trained lower-class Basque clubs such as Deportivo Alavés and FC Barakaldo between 1955 and 1962 . For the 1968/69 season he took over a first division club for the first time with Atlético Bilbao. While he only landed on a disappointing eleventh place in the league with the club, he made it to the quarter-finals in the Messestädte Cup 1968/69 after successes against FC Liverpool , Panathinaikos Athens and Eintracht Frankfurt , before being eliminated by the Glasgow Rangers . In addition, Iriondo won the Spanish Cup with Bilbao in the Copa del Generalísimo 1969 by beating Elche CF 1-0 . Despite the impressive cup results, he left the Basques after only one year and then looked after the second division RCD Español . Although he was promoted to the Primera División with the Catalans, Iriondo decided to remain in the second division by taking over the coaching position at Real Zaragoza . After he was promoted in the 1970/71 season with the club from Aragon , he returned to the Basque Country and was the new coach of the first division Real Sociedad for the 1971/72 season .

From 1974 to 1976 Iriondo trained again Athletic Bilbao and qualified with the club in the 1975/76 season as fifth for the UEFA Cup . Then Iriondo was signed by Betis Sevilla . The club from Andalusia finished fifth in 1976/77 and won the Spanish Cup for the first time in the club's history . Then Iriondo took part with the club in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1977/78 , in which, however, after victories against AC Milan and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, they did not get beyond the quarter-final opponent FK Dynamo Moscow . At the end of the 1977/78 season , the club also rose from the Segunda División , whereupon Iriondo was dismissed. After a year and a half break, he returned in February 1980 on the 20th match day of the 1979/80 season as coach of the relegation-threatened Rayo Vallecano back in the Primera División and thought he was on the right path with five wins in the first ten games before the club due of four defeats in the last four games still had to make their way to the second division.

In the 1981/82 season he trained again Betis Sevilla, left the club, which qualified for the UEFA Cup at the end of the season, but after the 29th matchday and then went into retirement.
