Career

As a player

Urquizu was born in Ondarroa in the Basque Country in 1901 . He began his career in 1922 with CA Osasuna in neighboring Navarre . In 1927 he played briefly for Espanyol Barcelona before moving to Real Madrid in 1928 , when he played the first season of the newly founded Primera División and reached the final of the Copa del Rey in 1929 . On March 17, 1929 Urquizu played his first and only international match for Spain when Portugal were defeated 5-0 in Seville . For the 1929/30 season Urquizu returned to his Basque homeland and from then on played under English coach Fred Pentland for Athletic Bilbao . In the first year, Athletic won the championship and cup double , with Urquizu only playing five league games. When winning the double was repeated the following year , he was a regular player with 17 league appearances. In the seasons 1931/32 and 1932/33 he did not miss a league match, was second with his club and won the Spanish Cup two more times . At the third championship win in 1933/34 he came under the new coach Patricio Caicedo only to five league appearances. Also in the 1934/35 season he played only six games. He then ended his active career in 1935 at the age of 34.

As a trainer

After the Spanish Civil War , Urquizu took over as coach at Atlético Bilbao for the 1940/41 season . In the same year, the Basques signed the then unknown 19-year-old striker Zarra , who would become a living legend in Spanish football in the following years due to his goal scoring records . In Urquizu's first year, the team just missed the championship with two points behind Atlético Aviación . In the 1941/42 season , the club did not get beyond seventh place in the table, but reached the final of the Copa del Generalísimo 1942 , which was ultimately lost 3: 4 against CF Barcelona . In the 1942/43 season Atlético Bilbao finally won the double for the third time in the club's history: In the championship they relegated FC Sevilla and CF Barcelona to their places, in the final of the Copa del Generalísimo 1943 they beat Real Madrid, coached by Ramón Encinas with a goal from Zarra 1-0 after extra time. While Urquizu's team achieved only average results in the league in the following two years, the cup title was defended in both 1944 and 1945 by winning the final against Valencia CF. In the seasons 1945/46 and 1946/47 Bilbao came third and second respectively. After the team had only been able to win one of the first seven games in the 1947/48 season , Urquizu was dismissed from the club after seven years and 235 competitive games (185 first division games, 50 cup games).

Urquizu then coached the second division club FC Barakaldo until the end of the season , before returning to the Primera División in 1948/49 and hired by Real Oviedo . With the club from Asturias he was fifth at the end of the season. In the 1949/50 season , the club won under Urquizu, however, only four of 26 games and rose from bottom of the table in the Segunda División .
