The Estadio de San Mamés is a football stadium in the Spanish city ​​of Bilbao in the Basque Country Autonomous Community . It has been the new home ground of the first division team Athletic Bilbao since 2013 and the second team Athletic Bilbao B , which currently plays in the third-class Segunda Division B , since 2015 . The new stadium was built right next to the old San Mamés from 1913.

Planning

According to the plans, three stands of the new stadium were built right next to the old San Mamés. The old San Mamés was then torn down in order to build the missing fourth grandstand in the same place. The stadium capacity is 53,289 spectators, but can be increased to 58,000. Internationally, a capacity of 50,000 viewers is available.

The new building project was already decided in 2006. The first groundbreaking took place on May 26, 2010 in the presence and a. of the Basque Prime Minister Patxi López and the Mayor of Bilbao Iñaki Azkuna. On September 16, 2013, the new home of Athletic Bilbao was inaugurated.

On August 14, 2015, Athletic met FC Barcelona in front of their own audience in the first leg of the Supercopa de España . Bilbao beat Barça 4-0 and laid the foundation for winning the Spanish Supercup.

At the World Architecture Festival 2015 in Singapore , the Estadio de San Mamés was named the best new sports building in the world .

In April 2016, work began to reduce the size of the opening in the roof, as thousands of spectators complained about the poor protection from rain and wind. The club also considered a closable roof, but the effort and costs spoke against it, as well as the poorer conditions for the natural grass field. According to the regulations, the seats in the stadium were 100% covered. The opening in the roof was added, strained with steel cables, ETFE - membranes m² reduced to 4,000 from 8,000. The cost was around 12 million euros.

On April 3, 2017 it was announced that the final of the European Rugby Champions Cup 2017/18 will take place in San Mamés . On May 12, 2018, Rugby and Racing 92 (15:12) met at San Mamés Leinster . For the first time a final of a European rugby competition took place in Spain.

European football championship 2021

The San Mamés was selected as one of twelve European stadiums for the 2021 European Football Championship in September 2014 . The stadium is intended for three group matches and one match in the round of 16:

costs

The cost of building the stadium came to around 198.1 million euros. They are distributed among several donors; who also jointly own the stadium. The Athletic Bilbao association, like the Basque government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Sparkasse Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa (BBK), are contributing 50 million euros to the construction. The city of Bilbao is contributing 12 million euros.
