Heineken Cup 2006/07

The Heineken Cup 2007/08 was the 13th edition of the Heineken Cup (predecessor of the European Rugby Champions Cup ), the most important European cup competition in rugby union . 24 teams from six countries took part. Because of the World Cup taking place in September and October , the start of the season had to be postponed by three weeks. The first of a total of 79 games was played on November 9, 2007, the final took place on May 24, 2008 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff . Cup winner was Munster Rugby from Ireland, which defeated the French team Stade Toulousain in the final.

mode

On June 20, 2007, the participants were divided into six groups of four teams each. Each team played a home and an away game against the three group opponents. In the group stage, the teams received

  • four points for a win
  • two points for a tie
  • a bonus point for four or more attempts
  • a bonus point for a loss of less than seven points

For the quarter-finals, the six group winners (classified according to the number of points won in places 1–6) and the two best runners-up (classified in places 7–8) qualified. Teams ranked 1-4 had home rights in the quarter-finals. The first played against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.

Pre-qualification

In the pre-qualification, the worst placed team of the Celtic League and not automatically qualified for the Heineken Cup met the third-placed team of the Italian Super 10 championship to determine the 24th place on the grid.
