Heineken Cup 2004/05

The Heineken Cup 2005/06 was the eleventh edition of the Heineken Cup , the most important European cup competition in rugby union . 24 teams from six countries took part. The first of a total of 78 games took place on October 21, 2005, the final on May 20, 2006 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff . Cup winner was Munster Rugby from Ireland, which defeated the French club Biarritz Olympique in the final.

mode

The participants were divided into six groups of four teams each. Each team played a home and an away game against the three group opponents. In the group stage, the teams received

  • four points for a win
  • two points for a tie
  • a bonus point for four or more attempts
  • a bonus point for a loss of less than seven points

For the quarter-finals, the six group winners (classified according to the number of points won in places 1–6) and the two best runners-up (classified in places 7–8) qualified. Teams ranked 1-4 had home rights in the quarter-finals. The first against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.
