Heineken Cup 1996/97

The Heineken Cup 1997/98 was the third edition of the Heineken Cup , the most important European cup competition in rugby union . 20 teams from six countries took part. The final took place on January 31, 1998 at the Stade Lescure in Bordeaux . Cup winner was Bath Rugby from England, which defeated the French club CA Brive in the final.

The participants were divided into four groups with five teams each. Each team played a home game and an away game against all group opponents. The group winners qualified directly for the quarter-finals, while the group runners-up and the best third-placed group made up the remaining three quarter-finals among themselves in a qualifying round.

The points were distributed as follows:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 1 point for a tie
