Martin Edward Corry MBE (born October 12, 1973 in Birmingham ) is a former English rugby union player . He played as a second-row striker , winger and number eight for the Leicester Tigers and was active for the English national team for 10 years .

Career

Corry went to school in Tunbridge Wells , was the captain of Northumbria University and played for England's U18 and U21 teams. He was also used in the England A reserve team. In 1997 he ran for the first time for the men's national team against Argentina . In the same year he moved from Bristol Rugby to the Leicester Tigers, where he played for twelve years.

In 2001 Corry was first nominated for a tour of the British and Irish Lions , which led the selection to Australia . He was used in all games. Clive Woodward took him back to the 2003 World Cup . Due to the birth of his first daughter Eve, Corry flew back home, but returned during the course of the tournament and was able to celebrate the world title in the end.

England coach Woodward also became the Lions' selection coach in 2005 and Corry was again part of the squad. The tour to New Zealand ended in three defeats. In the same year he became the captain of the English national team and held this position until the Six Nations in 2007 , when Phil Vickery inherited him. Under the new national coach Brian Ashton he was still part of the English selection and was also taken to the 2007 World Cup , where England reached the final again, but was defeated there by South Africa . The final was Corry's last international match, but he continued his club career.

At the end of the 2008/09 season he also stopped playing club rugby.
