Philip John Vickery MBE (born March 14, 1976 in Barnstaple ) is an English rugby union player . He plays as a pillar for the England national team and the London Wasps .
Vickery made his debut for England against Wales as a substitute in 1998 at the age of 21 . At the 1999 World Cup , he was also part of the squad. In the following season he became a regular player and was nominated for the tour of the British and Irish Lions , where he was used in all three friendly matches against Australia .
In the run-up to the Six Nations 2003 Vickery fell out due to injuries, but came back in the summer to prepare for the World Cup . At the World Cup he played a major role and was able to beat host Australia in the final with the team and win the first World Cup title for England. Following this triumph, however, he injured himself a few times, so that he was out for an entire year.
In January 2007 Vickery was appointed captain of the English national team, succeeding Martin Corry . In the summer of the year he was no longer considered because he had reached the knockout games in the Heineken Cup with his club London Wasps . At the end of the season, the Wasps even won the trophy. At the World Cup , however, he was back in England's squad and led the team as captain to the final, where South Africa was beaten. With the appointment of Martin Johnson as national coach, Steve Borthwick replaced Vickery as captain.
In 2009 he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa . He was used in the first and last game in the series.
He got his nickname “Raging Bull” ( like a wild bull ) early in his career and adopted it for his clothing brand.
