Stephen William Borthwick (born October 12, 1979 in Carlisle ) is an English rugby union player . He plays as a second-row striker for the England national team and the Saracens .

Borthwick was part of the U18 team in 1997, which was unbeaten on a tour to Australia and consisted of players such as Jonny Wilkinson , Andrew Sheridan or Lee Mears . In 2001 he played for England A for the first time and was captain of the national team's reserve several times. He made his debut for England's elite team in April 2001 against France .

In the run-up to the 2003 World Cup , he was part of the extended squad of England, but was not considered for the World Cup. From the summer of 2004 to the Six Nations in 2006 , he was part of the starting line-up in all games. However, a knee injury put him out of action for some time. He returned to the preparation games for the 2007 World Cup and this time also made it to the squad at the World Cup.

After moving from Bath to the Saracens, he was appointed vice-captain of his new club. He had previously won the European Challenge Cup with Bath , the first title for the club in 10 years. During the summer tour to New Zealand , Borthwick also became captain of the national team, succeeding Phil Vickery .
