history

The "All Whites" were founded as a football club in 1872 and switched to rugby in 1874. The first game played the club on November 28, 1874 against Llandovery College. In 1875 they merged with the local cricket club to form the Swansea Cricket & Football Club. The current name Swansea RFC was created in the course of the professionalization of rugby sport in 1995. The club was one of the eleven founding clubs of the Welsh Rugby Union , which was founded in 1881. Initially, the team competed in blue and white jerseys, for one season they also wore red colors. In the 1920s, the traditional jersey was created, which consisted almost entirely of white.

In 1935, the Swansea RFC became the first rugby club in the world to beat the New Zealand national team . With this victory Swansea had also managed to defeat all three major rugby nations in the southern hemisphere. Before that, Australia (1908) and South Africa (1912) had been beaten. After the Second World War, the team was able to build on their successes, defeating Australia again and creating a 6-6 draw against New Zealand in 1953.

The club has been champion four times since the 1990s and has won two more cups. In 1992 he again managed to beat Australia, who were reigning world champions at the time . In the 1995/96 season Swansea reached the semi-finals of the European Cup.

A lot changed for the Swansea RFC with the 2003/04 season. The Welsh Rugby Union founded regional teams that should compete in the Celtic League (today: Pro12). For this purpose, the Neath RFC and the Swansea RFC were merged and merged under the name Ospreys. Both clubs own 50% of the new club.
