The participants were divided into six groups of four teams each. Each team played a home and an away game against the three group opponents. For the first time ever, a bonus point system was used. In the group stage, the teams received

  • four points for a win
  • two points for a tie
  • a bonus point for four or more attempts
  • a bonus point for a loss of less than seven points

The six group winners and the two best runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals.
