Jean-Baptiste Élissalde (born November 23, 1977 in La Rochelle , Charente-Maritime department ) is a former French rugby union player and current coach. He played as a scrum half or connector for La Rochelle and Stade Toulousain as well as for the French national team .

Career

Élissalde began his career in 1997 at Atlantique Stade Rochelais , his hometown club. He made his debut for the French national team at the Six Nations 2000 against Scotland . He had previously been nominated to replace the injured Richard Dourthe in the squad. Since his debut, he has established himself as a versatile and stable player.

In 2002 Élissalde moved to Toulouse, where he had to compete with numerous other national players and could not always prevail. He was not used to win the Heineken Cup and was not taken into account for the World Cup that year. He came back at the Six Nations in 2004 , where he scored 24 points against Wales, among others . In this game, however, he was seriously injured and was out for the rest of the season.

In 2005, Élissalde again missed a final in the Heineken Cup , this time due to an injury. In the Six Nations 2006 and 2007 he became a regular player and ousted Dimitri Yachvili . The French won both editions of the most traditional tournament. At the World Cup , which took place in his own country, he was used in all games.

In 2008 Toulouse reached the final of the Heineken Cup again , this time Élissalde could also take part. However, the team narrowly lost to the Irish province of Munster . After Toulouse won the Heineken Cup in 2010, Élissalde announced his retirement as a player. Since the 2010/11 season he has been working as an assistant coach for his long-term club Stade Toulousain.
