mode

On June 17, 2008, the participants were divided into six groups of four teams each. For the first time, the betting order was based on the results of the individual clubs in previous years. Each team played a home and an away game against the three group opponents. In the group stage, the teams received

  • four points for a win
  • two points for a tie
  • a bonus point for four or more attempts
  • a bonus point for a loss of seven or less points

For the quarter-finals, the six group winners (classified according to the number of points won in places 1–6) and the two best runners-up (classified in places 7–8) qualified. Teams ranked 1-4 had home rights in the quarter-finals. The first played against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.

Group stage

  • Group winners, qualified for quarter-finals
  • Two best runners-up, qualified for quarter-finals

This game went down in history as "Bloodgate". Dean Richards, the Harlequins coach, was banned for three years for faking an injury to player Tom Williams with movie blood in order to make a tactical change. Williams himself was originally banned for a year; however, his sentence was reduced to four months after he revealed the background to the scandal.
