Harry Alistair Ellis (born May 17, 1982 in Wigston , Leicestershire ) is a former English rugby union player . He played as a scrum half for the England national team and the Leicester Tigers .

Career

Ellis began his career with the South Leicester RFC when he was six , later playing for the Wigston RFC a year before joining the Tigers Academy in 1997. He ran for the regional selection of Leicestershire and was also nominated for the youth national teams of England. In 2001 he ran for the first time for the men's team of the Tigers against Stade Toulousain and was named junior player of the season at the end of his first season.

Ellis made his debut for the national team against South Africa in November 2004 as a substitute. It was used in all Six Nations games in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Due to a torn knee ligament , he was unable to participate in the 2007 World Cup and did not return to the ranks of England until November 2008.

In 2009 he was nominated for the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa . That year he won the English championship with Leicester and reached the final in the Heineken Cup , which was lost to Leinster .

In July 2010, Ellis announced his resignation and justified this with persistent knee problems.
