Dick MacNeill

Richard "Dick" MacNeill (born January 7, 1898 in Pasuruan , Dutch East Indies , † June 3, 1963 in Heemstede ) was a Dutch football goalkeeper . He played for HVV Den Haag and was goalkeeper for the Dutch national team in seven matches in 1920 .

MacNeill's international career began after his predecessor in the Dutch goal, Just Göbel , sustained an eye injury and had to wear glasses. Göbel then retired from active sport, and MacNeill was able to make his debut in Oranje on April 5, 1920 . In the friendly against Denmark in Amsterdam he kept his goal clean, the Dutch won 2-0. MacNeill was in the squad for the Olympic Games in Antwerp appointed. He was in goal for the Netherlands in all games. The Elftal lost the semi-final against hosts Belgium 3-0, but were allowed to play for second place against Spain because the Czechoslovaks were disqualified after the aborted final against Belgium . After a 3-1 defeat, the Dutch were able to take the bronze medal with them on their short journey home. The next international match took place six months later; MacNeill was no longer in the squad, Henk van Tilburg took over the place in the Oranje goal.
