Shichigahama ( Japanese 七ヶ浜町 , - machi , dt "7 beaches.") Is a town in the district of Miyagi in the Miyagi Prefecture .

geography

Shichigahama extends over the peninsula of the same name, which is located in Sendai Bay , and from this in turn separates Matsuura Bay or its western part ( Shiogama Bay ) in the north. In front of the peninsula is the 0.15 km² island of Mahanashi-jima ( 馬 放 島 ), which has been uninhabited since 1958. This in turn is surrounded by around 10 smaller islets. To the east of the peninsula are reefs with other islets. The Matsushima group of islands extends to the northeast, but does not belong to the municipality.

Shichigahama is about 15 kilometers from the city of Sendai, the largest city of Tōhoku . Most of Shichigahama's houses were built within a radius of about three miles.

history

On April 1, 1889, the village of Shichigahama ( 七 ヶ 浜 村 , - mura ) was founded. The name Shichigahama ("Seven Beaches") comes from the 7 beach villages from which the community was formed. These are clockwise Yokasakihama ( 代 ヶ 崎 浜 ), Yoshidahama ( 吉田 浜 ), Hanabuchihama ( 花 渕 浜 ), Shōbutahama ( 菖蒲 田 浜 , dt. " Iris field beach"), Matsugahama ( 松 ヶ 浜 , dama . "Pines beach") ( 湊 浜 , dt. "Harbor beach") and Tōgūhama ( 東宮 d , dt. "East shrine beach").

In the same year, the establishment of the foreign summer resort Takayama ( 高山 外国人 避暑 地 , Takayama gaikokujin hisochi ). American missionaries built their mansions there, and it was customary to take a two-month summer vacation each year. Along with Karuizawa and Lake Nojiri in Shinano, it was one of the three big summer resorts for foreigners. This health resort is now the International Takayama Village ( 高山 国際 村 , Takayama kokusai mura ).

On January 1, 1959, he was appointed Machi.

On March 11, 2011, the city was hit by the Tōhoku earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. About 46 percent of the city was flooded by the tsunami. According to the damage report by the fire and disaster control authority, 79 people in Shichigahama lost their lives as a result of the disaster, while 2 remained missing. 674 residential buildings were completely destroyed and 650 others were partially destroyed.

The Tagajō - Shichigahama section of Prefecture Road 58 runs through Shichigahama . The city has no connection to the rail network.

education

Shichigahama is home to the Shiomi Municipal Elementary School ( 七 ヶ 浜 町 立 汐 見 小学校 ), the Ekiraku Municipal Elementary School ( 七 ヶ 浜 町 立 亦 楽 小学校 ) and the Matsugahama Municipal Elementary School ( 七 ヶ 浜 町 立 松 ヶ 浜 浜 小学校 ), the Municipal Middle School and the Shichigahama School Kōyō Middle School ( 七 ヶ 浜 町 立 向 洋 中 学校 ). The Ekiraku Primary School and the Shichigahama Middle School take part as frontier schools in a MEXT project to increase learning ability.
