Tagajō ( Japanese 多 賀 城市 , - shi ) is a city in Miyagi Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .
history
The city is named after Taga Castle , which was built in northern Japan to protect against the Emishi since the Nara period . After 802 the castle complex still served as the administrative center of the surrounding area. Buildings have not been preserved, but the complex is considered to be one of the three best preserved from the Nara period.

One of the three campuses of Tōhoku Gakuin University is located in Tagajō .
2011 Tōhoku earthquake
On March 11, 2011, the city was hit by the Tōhoku earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. The number of completely destroyed residential buildings is put at 1,746 and that of the partially destroyed at 3,730.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reported 186 dead and 4 missing persons up to its 124th damage report on May 19, and increased the information to 219 dead by the 157th damage report on March 7, 2018. Measured against the total population of Tagajō, which was given in the 2010 census with 63,060, the victim rate from the disaster of 2011 was 0.3%. For the flood area of the tsunami in Tagajō, which covered an area of 6 km 2 , the casualty rate was 1.10 percent.
