James Roberts (born November 8, 1986 in Newport , Wales ) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays for the Cardiff Blues and for the Welsh national team. He plays in the inner three-quarters and goalkeeper positions .

Roberts began his club career at Cardiff RFC and joined the Blues regional team in 2005. He had previously run through the country's youth national teams and reached the Grand Slam at the Six Nations 2005 in this age group with the U21 team. At the Six Nations 2007 he was in the extended squad of the Welsh national team for the first time, but has not yet been used. In the same year he was appointed to the roster of the 7-man rugby national team for the Hong Kong Sevens and the tournament in Adelaide , where he contributed two attempts in the bowl final.

His first international game followed at the six-nation tournament the following year, where he started against Scotland . He was also used on the tour to South Africa and made his first attempt in the first game against the Springboks . In the November internationals he was a permanent member of the team, in the final game against Australia he suffered a skull fracture after a collision with Stirling Mortlock . However, he got fit in time to take part in the 2009 Six Nations . With the Blues he won the EDF Energy Cup during the season . His successful season was crowned by a nomination for the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa .

Roberts has been studying medicine at the University of Wales since 2005 .
