Stirling Austin Mortlock AM (born May 20, 1977 in Sydney ) is a former Australian rugby union player , former captain of the Australian national team and former captain of the super rugby team Melbourne Rebels . He played on the inner three-quarters position .

Career

Mortlock began his career with the youth team at the Lindfield Rugby Club. After graduating from school, he was appointed to the U19 team in 1996 and a year later to the U21 team in Australia.

In 1998 Mortlock joined the Brumbies and succeeded George Gregan as captain of the team in 2004 . A participation in the final of the Super 14 has so far not been granted to him because he injured himself in the semifinals in 2001 and 2004.

In 2000, Mortlock made his national team debut against Argentina . He quickly reached the 50 and 100 point mark and was the first Australian to score 20 or more points in four consecutive internationals. Australia won the Tri Nations title for the first time this year and won the Bledisloe Cup at the same time . Mortlock scored the decisive penalty kick in the last game against South Africa to win the 19:18 and win the tournament.

In 2003 he was part of the Wallabies, who lost to England in the final at the World Championships . In the semifinals, he scored a try against New Zealand after intercepting the ball and covering it over 80 meters to put it in the in-goal. After the victory, he was voted “Player of the Day”.

In 2006, Mortlock was named captain of the national team. The following year he celebrated his 50th international appearance. At the 2007 World Championships , he led the Wallabies to the quarter-finals, where they were again subject to England.

In February 2008, Mortlock announced that he would play for Australia and the Brumbies until the end of 2010, thus declining numerous offers from the European leagues. From 2011 to 2012 he played for the Melbourne Rebels , the fifth Australian team in the extended league Super Rugby .
