John Fogarty

John Fogarty CSSp (born April 9, 1952 in Finglas , Ireland ) is a Roman Catholic religious .

Life

After graduating from school, John Fogarty joined the order of the Mission Society of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (short: Spiritaner ) and initially studied physics and mathematics in Dublin . In the 1970s he taught physics in Ghana . From 1978 to 1982 he studied theology at the Swiss University of Friborg . He made his profession on October 2, 1979 and was ordained a priest on September 27, 1981.

From 1982 to 1986 he worked in a parish in the Kumasi diocese in Ghana. In 1986 he became a provincial councilor for the Irish Spiritans. From 1990 to 1996 John Fogarty was Rector of the Philosophy of Spiritans in Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juaben District in Ghana. From 1994 to 1998 he was Provincial Assistant in Ireland. In 1998 he was elected by the General Chapter of the Spiritans as their first general assistant in the General Council, the highest governing body of the Spiritans, in Rome. In 2005 he took over the management of the Spiritan Center at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, USA . In 2010 he was elected the first Provincial of the newly established United States .

On July 11, 2012, John Fogarty was elected by the General Chapter in Bagamoyo , Tanzania , as the 24th Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritan) for an eight-year term. The official seat is Rome .
