The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is the national sports association for rugby union in England . She takes on the organization of international matches and is responsible for the education and training of players and referees. The headquarters are in Twickenham Stadium , where the home games of the English national team are traditionally played.

history

The national team in 1871, which played the first international match in history against Scotland

On January 26, 1871, the representatives of 21 English clubs met in London to found the RFU and to put down a set of rules for the sport in writing. The planned 22nd representative was supposed to come from the London Wasps , but did not reach the first meeting in time.

Rugby union rules were determined by the RFU until 1885 when Ireland , Scotland and Wales created the International Rugby Board because they were not satisfied with some provisions. England initially refused membership and did not join the new umbrella organization until 1890.

In 1895 clubs from the north of England formed their own association, the Northern Rugby Football Union, which later became known as the Rugby Football League . The RFU excluded the clubs concerned from gaming because they wanted to pay their players and thus violate their existing amateur status. The exclusion also affected all players who belonged to the clubs and those who played against the excluded clubs without pay.

The RFU fought for several decades against the introduction of a league operation. The John Player Cup , the first cup competition for English clubs, was not created until 1972 . In 1987 a national league with several divisions was introduced, which today is the most important in Europe alongside the French league Top 14 and the multinational Pro12 .
