The Heineken Cup 1995/96 was the first edition of the Heineken Cup , the most important European cup competition in rugby union . Twelve teams from France , Ireland , Italy , Wales and (so far for the only time) Romania took part . Teams from England and Scotland were not allowed to start from their associations for scheduling reasons. The final took place on January 6, 1996 at Cardiff Arms Park . The first cup winner was the French club Stade Toulousain , which beat the Cardiff RFC in the final .

The participants were divided into four groups with three teams each. Each team only met one of the two group opponents once, so there was a home game and an away game. The four group winners qualified for the semifinals.

The points were distributed as follows:

  • 2 points for a win
  • 1 point for a tie
