Career

Murphy began his professional rugby career in England at Leicester, where he still plays today. With this team he won the Heineken Cup , the most important European title for club teams , in 2001 and 2002 . In Ireland he had previously played for Newbridge College. In 2000 he made his national team debut against the United States , putting in two attempts . Between 2001 and 2003 he played in 17 games in Ireland and scored another seven attempts, but he injured his knee in a preparation game for the 2003 World Cup , so that he was out for this tournament. He returned to the Six Nations in 2004 and scored an attempt to secure the Triple Crown in the important victory over Scotland .

2005 Murphy was nominated for the squad of the British and Irish Lions and came to two friendly matches. With the Leicester Tigers, he celebrated winning the Guinness Premiership and the EDF Energy Cup in 2007 , but was no longer an undisputed regular in the Irish national team, as Girvan Dempsey was sometimes preferred to him, with whom he has competed ever since. At the 2007 World Cup he came to three missions and put an attempt against Argentina .

At the Six Nations 2009 , the Irish reached the second Grand Slam after 1948 , Murphy made three appearances. In the same year he won the English championship with the Tigers and reached the final in the Heineken Cup, but lost to Leinster there .
