James Peter Richard Heaslip (born December 15, 1983 in Tiberias , Israel ) is a retired Irish rugby union player who played on the number eight position. He was active for the Leinster region and the Irish national team .

Heaslip began his rugby career at Naas RFC , playing for Dublin University and the Clontarf RFC . He made his debut for Leinster in March 2005 in the Celtic League . Previously, he was voted the best U21 player in the world after reaching the World Cup final with the Irish national team of this age group, where only New Zealand had to admit defeat. In autumn 2006 he was used for the first time in the men's national team against the Pacific Islanders ; he was the thousandth player to appear for Ireland.

Heaslip was nominated for the 2007 World Cup and was used in two games. At the Six Nations 2008 he became a regular player and reached the Grand Slam with Ireland in the 2009 edition . It was consequently also taken into account for the tour of the British and Irish Lions to South Africa . He also won the Heineken Cup with Leinster that year .

On February 26, 2018, Heaslip announced his resignation due to injury.
