Stephen Michael Jones MBE (born December 8, 1977 in Aberystwyth ) is a retired Welsh rugby union player . He played in the position of the connecting half , but was also used as the inner three-quarters in some games . For most of his career he was for the Scarlets and the Welsh national team. He is currently working as a trainer.

Career

Jones began his career at Llanelli RFC in 1996 and stayed there until the end of the 2003/04 season. In his last season, his club at the time merged with others from the city of Llanelli to form the Scarlets . After eight years as a professional in his Welsh homeland, he moved to France , to ASM Clermont Auvergne . In his second season in the top 14 , he was voted connector of the season by French journalists.

After two years, Jones moved back to Llanelli, where he's been back for the Scarlets ever since. In 2007 he reached the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup with his team , but had to admit defeat to the Leicester Tigers from England . Due to some departures at the end of the 2007/08 season, a move from Jones was also an option. He had talks with various clubs, but has since signed a new three-year contract with the Scarlets and is expected to end his career in Llanelli.

Jones played his first international match in 1998 against South Africa . In 2005 he was one of the key players in winning the Welsh Grand Slam at the Six Nations . After beating Ireland in the final game , in which he scored 19 points, he was chosen to join the entire tournament. In October 2006, then national coach Gareth Jenkins Jones appointed captain; he should lead the team to a successful World Cup the following year. However, the Welsh were eliminated from this tournament in the preliminary round by losing to Australia and Fiji .

In 2005 Jones was part of the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand . In his position, however, Jonny Wilkinson was preferred to him, he still came to three games and scored 14 points. In 2008 Jones was able to win the Grand Slam at the Six Nations again with Wales . In 2009 he was nominated again for the British and Irish Lions Tour. It was used in all three games in the series.
