Neil Jenkins MBE (born July 8, 1971 in Church Village ) is a retired Welsh rugby union player who played in the position of connector for the Welsh national team , the British and Irish Lions and several clubs from Wales. He held until March 8, 2008 the record for the most points (1090) that a player has ever achieved in internationally recognized internationals, until Jonny Wilkinson was able to overtake him. He is currently the assistant coach of national coach Warren Gatland .

Jenkins started playing for the national team at the age of 19 and his strong kicking game allowed him to establish himself as part of the Welsh squad. At the beginning of his career, despite the numerous points he scored, he was repeatedly criticized for neglecting other elements of the game. In the course of time, however, he worked on his running and passing game, so that he was also among the top international in these areas.

Jenkins took part in the 1997 tour of the British and Irish Lions and was used in all three test matches on the position of goalkeeper . The Lions were able to prevail in the end with two wins and one loss against the South Africans . He was also part of the squad in 2001, but injured himself in the run-up to the tour. In the second game against Australia , however, he was substituted on for a short stint.

In the 2003/04 season he managed to get 44 successful kicks in a row. This achievement is a world record to this day. This was also his last season as an active athlete. After he was not nominated for the squad for the 2003 World Cup , he announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Jenkins has scored 1,049 points for Wales, making him the most scoring player for the Welsh national team. He is one of the most famous and respected athletes in his country and, although he no longer holds the world record for most points, is considered the best kicker in rugby history.

In October 2000 he was awarded the Order of Member of the British Empire for his services to rugby. After the handover at Buckingham Palace , he immediately flew back to Cardiff to score 20 points for the Blues at 24:14 over the Saracens .
