Yorkshire Carnegie (officially Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Union , known as Leeds Tykes until 2007 and Leeds Carnegie until 2014 ) is an English rugby union team that plays in the RFU Championship , the English second division. The home games are played at Headingley Stadium . Yorkshire Carnegie is part of Leeds Rugby Limited , which also includes the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team . 51 percent of the shares are owned by Leeds Metropolitan University .

history

The traditional clubs from the suburbs Headingley (founded 1877) and Roundhay (founded 1924) merged in 1991 and formed the new club Leeds Rugby Union Football Club . During its first season, the Leeds RUFC played in the National Division Three , the fourth highest division in England. In the 1997/98 season, the team made it to the second highest division, the then Premiership Two.

Another merger took place in July 1998 when the Leeds RUFC merged with the rugby league club Leeds Rhinos . The team was now called Leeds Tykes (the term Tyke describes a typical Yorkshire resident ). In 2001 she was promoted to the Premiership. The Tykes finished their first season in the top division in last place, but they were spared relegation: The first place in National Division One , the Rotherham RUFC , was not accepted into the Premiership because its stadium was well below the minimum capacity.

In December 2003 the Tykes played in the European Heineken Cup for the first time , but had no chance in the group stage. In 2005 they won the Powergen Cup ; in the final they surprisingly beat Bath Rugby with 20:12. At the end of the 2005/06 season, the Tykes were relegated to the National Division One, a year later they were immediately promoted again. On May 14, 2007, Leeds Metropolitan University took over the majority of shares in Leeds Rugby Limited . The team has been called Leeds Carnegie since then (after Carnegie College, the university's sports department). However, they only stayed in the major league for one season. In the following season, the immediate rise succeeded.

In February 2014 the plan was presented to rename the club from Leeds Carnegie to Yorkshire Carnegie, in July of that year the name change took place.
