The Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club (commonly referred to as Rhinos ) is a professional rugby league club from the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire , England , which plays in the Anglo-French Super League . The team plays their home games at Headingley Stadium , which can seat 21,200 spectators. The team colors are blue and yellow.

history

The club was founded in 1870 under the name Leeds St. John's and in 1895 was one of the founding members of the Northern Union, later the Rugby Football League , which split off from the Rugby Football Union . In 1910, the team won its first major title with the Challenge Cup . The first national championship title, however, was a long time coming. With a total of five championships and three Challenge Cup victories, the 1960s and 1970s were the most successful times in the club's history. Comparable successes could not be achieved in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1996, Leeds was a founding member of the Super League and was nicknamed Rhinos . At the beginning of the new millennium, the rise to a real top team took place. Between 2004 and 2012, the Rhinos won six championship titles and three times the World Club Challenge , in which the winner of the Super League competes against the champion of the National Rugby League . In 2014 the prestigious Challenge Cup was won for the first time in 15 years. In 2015 the Rhinos defended the Challenge Cup and won their twelfth championship with a 22:20 against the Wigan Warriors .

Rivalries

The Rhinos' traditional local rivals are the Bradford Bulls and Huddersfield Giants . The recent successes have also resulted in strong rivalries with the traditional top teams Wigan Warriors and St Helens .
