Wigan Warriors Rugby League Football Club is an English rugby league club from Wigan , Greater Manchester . Alongside the St Helens RLFC and the Leeds Rhinos , the club is one of the dominant clubs in the European Rugby League and the Super League . With a total of 20 English championship titles, 30 finals and 19 wins in the Challenge Cup , as well as three World Club Challenge victories , the club is record holder in several respects.

history

Wigan was founded in 1872 as a rugby union club under the name Wigan FC or Wigan Wasps and was one of the 21 clubs that founded the Northern Union in 1895 and thus triggered the separation of the League and Union code. Wigan was one of the top teams in the new sport of rugby league from the start . In 1909 they won the Rugby Football League Championship for the first time , and in 1924 the first Challenge Cup. Countless other title wins at national and regional level took place particularly in the extremely successful 1940s and 1950s.

By the late 1980s, Wigan became the most dominant team in English rugby league history. Between January 30, 1988 and February 11, 1996, Wigan remained victorious in the Challenge Cup for 43 games and eight years. From 1990 to 1996 the club won seven championship titles in a row. In 1987, 1991 and 1994 they also won the World Club Challenge .

With the introduction of the Super League in 1996, the unconditional dominance of the Warriors ended. Although they won the first Grand Final against the Leeds Rhinos in 1998 , they had to wait 18 years for another championship title. In 2010 this dry spell ended with a win against arch rivals St Helens, and in 2013 they won the twentieth championship against the Warrington Wolves . In 2016, the title was again brought to Wigan by beating Warrington.
