In the predecessor competition of the Super League, the Rugby League Championship , the Saints were successful seven times. Twelve times they won the Challenge Cup .

history

The association was founded in 1873, making it one of the oldest in the country. In 1890 the first game took place at the stadium on Knowsley Road. While in the south of England mainly representatives of the middle and upper classes played rugby, the clubs in the north were mostly made up of workers. The players did not receive any compensation because the Rugby Football Union (RFU) insisted on strict amateurism . On August 29, 1895, representatives of 22 clubs from northern England, including from St Helens, met for a meeting in Huddersfield and decided to leave the RFU. They founded their own association, the Northern Rugby Football Union (today's Rugby Football League ).

In 1897 St Helens was in the final of the Challenge Cup , which was held for the first time , but were subject to the Batley Bulldogs . In 1932 the Saints were able to celebrate winning the English championship for the first time. The attendance record at Knowsley Road was achieved on December 26, 1949, when 35,695 spectators saw the game against Wigan. At the beginning of the 1950s, the Saints rose to become one of the leading teams in the country. They were able to win the Challenge Cup for the first time in 1956 when they defeated the Halifax RLFC in the final at Wembley Stadium . By the mid-1970s, five more championship titles and four additional cup wins followed.

After a lack of success in the 1980s and early 1990s, the Saints established themselves as one of the best teams in the world after the introduction of the Anglo-French Super League . Since then, they have won the Super League championship trophy six times and another seven trophies in the Challenge Cup. There are also two victories in the World Club Challenge against the champions of the Australian-New Zealand National Rugby League ; in both 2001 and 2007 the Saints won against the Brisbane Broncos . In 2006 St Helens was named "Team of the Year" by the BBC .
